Beijing releases list of first batch of urban renewal plan projects in 2026

Xinhua News Agency Beijing (Reporter Chen Xu) A reporter learned from the Beijing Municipal Housing and Urban-Rural Development Commission on the 14th that in order to give full play to the important role of urban renewal in the high-quality development of the capital and help achieve a "good start" in the first quarter, Beijing recently released the first batch of urban renewal plan project lists in 2026. The first batch of projects totals 1,321, including 745 newly implemented projects and 576 carried over and continued projects in 2025. The first batch of projects in 2026 plans to invest 104.95 billion yuan.

Key projects focus on the inheritance of historical context and comprehensive improvement of the area, including application-based lease cancellation around the Forbidden City, comprehensive urban renewal of the Jingshan Phase III area, Xicheng District Baita Temple Historical Style Protection Area, central axis landscape improvement-Meishi Street East Area comprehensive environmental improvement, etc., focusing on activating the value of existing space, so that urban renewal not only retains the historical charm, but also meets people's livelihood needs.

From the perspective of regional layout, this urban renewal plan project comprehensively covers the core area, central urban area, Beijing sub-center, Pingyuan New City and ecological conservation area, involving Dongcheng, Xicheng, Chaoyang, Haidian, Fengtai, Shijingshan, Shunyi, Changping, Daxing, Tongzhou and other areas, accurately connecting the development needs and public demands of different areas.

In terms of project types, the first batch of urban renewal plan projects cover eight major types: renovation and utilization of existing buildings, renovation of old communities, construction of complete communities, renewal of old neighborhood business districts and industrial areas, renewal of urban infrastructure, improvement of urban functions and people's livelihood protection, restoration of urban ecosystems, and protection and inheritance of historical culture.

In the next step, Beijing will continue to make full use of the "Beijing Urban Renewal Policy Incentive Toolbox (Version 1.0)", step up the preparation and release of service flow charts for various policy tools, establish project "weekly scheduling, monthly reporting" and a full-process "flag-planting and flag-raising" management mechanism, promote the implementation of projects "as early as possible and as quickly as possible", and continue to activate the value of urban stock space.
