Polling for the Eighth Legislative Council Election of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region ended at 23:30 on the 7th. In the early morning of December 8, after counting, 20 members of the district direct election constituency were finally successfully elected. At this point, plus the 40 seats of the Election Committee constituency and the 30 seats of the functional group constituency earlier on the 8th, all 90 Legislative Council members to be elected in this Hong Kong SAR Legislative Council election have been elected. This is another important election held in Hong Kong after improving the electoral system and implementing the principle of "patriots governing Hong Kong".
The eighth Legislative Council has a total of 90 seats, divided into 40 seats in the Election Committee sector, 30 seats in the functional group sector, and 20 seats in the district direct election sector. This institutional arrangement has been used for two terms since the electoral system was improved in 2021. It aims to ensure the full implementation of the principle of "patriots governing Hong Kong" so that the Legislative Council can be broadly representative, operate efficiently, and truly reflect the interests of all sectors of society. In all three sectoral elections of the current Legislative Council, the turnout rate exceeded that of the previous term.
From the perspective of the elected list, the composition of the new Legislative Council members is broad and diverse. The candidates elected in the Election Committee sector span many fields such as industrial and commercial finance, innovation and technology, and social services; the functional constituencies and district direct elections also attract representatives from professional sectors, industry backbones, members of social organizations, and a new generation of public affairs participants. Some members have rich experience in parliament and public administration, and there are also new faces who have been elected for the first time and have served on the front line of the industry for a long time, bringing new perspectives and motivation to the parliament. The combination of diverse backgrounds shows that the structure of the new Legislative Council is closer to the overall appearance of society, and professional opinions from different sectors can be gathered on an institutionalized platform to further enhance the breadth and depth of policy discussions.
The term of the eighth Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will begin on January 1, 2026, and will last for four years. (Headquarters reporters Zhou Weiqi and Zhu Dan)
