Under the sunlight, the powder snow at Xinjiang Keketuhai International Ski Resort exudes a luster. Nalpoli Hailati, a fifth-grade student at Fuyun County, Altay Prefecture, rushed down from the mountaintop in the distance, and the S curve of the snowboard was clearly visible. "I have been looking forward to a trip, and this trip is worth it."
Hundreds of kilometers away, Muheyati Danyal, a physical education teacher at Altay No. 2 Middle School, took the students to the ski resort for class. "Moving" physical education classes into the ski resort is an innovative move by primary and secondary schools in Altay in recent years. Starting from 2018, Altay City has included skiing in the physical education teaching content for primary and secondary school students. In recent years, every snow season, five schools in Altay will appropriately adjust their classroom arrangements and organize hundreds of students to travel to and from the General Mountain Ski Resort to learn skiing every day. The fees are the responsibility of the local education department. There are special cars to and from the ski resort. After arriving at the ski resort, professional coaches will be arranged to teach. The class teacher and physical education teacher will follow the entire process to ensure the safety of students.
"Basically, every school has two physical education teachers who can ski. On average, each student can take 2-3 ski classes each season, each time half a day. Now more than 90% of the children in the school can ski," said Muheyati Danyaer.
The Middle School of Beitun 181st Regiment, the 10th Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, even "moved" the ski resort into the campus - there is the only campus cross-country ski resort in the country, with a professional ski slope of 2,500 meters. In addition, as a national ice and snow sports specialty school, the 181st Regiment Middle School has been carrying out speed skating courses for more than 40 years, and has built a standard ice rink with 400-meter slides and a 200-meter roller skating field, equipped with professional speed skating and cross-country skiing equipment and 8 professional teachers.
In Urumqi, many schools also offer ice and snow sports courses according to local conditions. The Experimental Primary School of Xinjiang Education University has set up a simulated ice rink on the basement floor of the teaching building, offering ice hockey classes, adopting a dual-teacher teaching model of external coaches and teachers of the school for teaching, and has formed a school ice hockey team; Urumqi No. 15 Middle School, as a characteristic school for ice and snow sports, offers skating classes in winter and roller skating classes in summer. Not only does the school's speed skating penetration rate reach 100%, but it also has newly opened ice hockey courses.
In recent years, Xinjiang has actively promoted and popularized ice and snow sports into campuses, and has continued to hold millions of youth ice and snow activities and U-series events for various youth projects. It has built 100 yuan in school ice rinks every year, and a total of 95 schools have become the "Sports Traditional Characteristic School of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Sports (Ice and Snow Project)".
