On October 17, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian hosted a regular press conference. In response to questions about Japanese politicians visiting the Yasukuni Shrine, spokesperson Lin Jian said that the Yasukuni Shrine is a spiritual tool and symbol of Japanese militarism in launching a war of aggression against foreign countries. It enshrines 14 Class-A war criminals who were responsible for serious crimes in the war of aggression. China firmly opposes Japan’s negative moves regarding the Yasukuni Shrine and has made solemn representations to Japan.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. A correct understanding and treatment of history is an important prerequisite for Japan to return to the international community after the war. It is the political basis for Japan to develop relations with neighboring countries, and it is also a yardstick for testing whether Japan can abide by its commitment to peaceful development. We urge Japan to face up to and reflect on its history of aggression, be cautious in its words and deeds on historical issues such as the Yasukuni Shrine, completely break away from militarism, adhere to the path of peaceful development, and win the trust of its Asian neighbors and the international community with practical actions.
