On January 7, 2025, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred in Dingri County, Shigatse City, Tibet, with a focal depth of 10 kilometers. The earthquake caused heavy casualties and property damage. As of 19:00 on January 7, the earthquake caused a large number of houses to collapse, with 3,609 houses collapsed.
In order to grasp the real-time situation of the disaster-stricken area, the "Jilin-1" satellite was urgently dispatched to pass through Dingri County, Tibet, to observe the disaster area; and provide it to relevant authorities as soon as possible after imaging units to assist in earthquake relief efforts.
Cuoguo Township, Dingri County
Cuoguo Township, Dingri County, is the epicenter of the 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Dingri County, Shigatse City, Tibet on January 7, 2025. The damage was very serious. According to the high-resolution images captured by the Jilin-1 satellite, most of the houses in Cuoguo Township are adobe houses, which collapsed seriously during the earthquake. As of 19:00 on January 7, the earthquake had killed 126 people and injured 188 people in Cuoguo Township and surrounding areas.
Changsuo Township, Dingri County
Jilin-1 satellite images show that most of the houses in Changsuo Township are civil structures with poor seismic resistance and serious collapse during earthquakes. Most of the houses in Tonglai Village, Gadan Village and other places collapsed, and some people were trapped. The two-story houses built by some villagers collapsed into bungalows, leaving only half of the walls intact on the second floor.
Quluo Township, Dingri County
The houses in Quluo Township, Dingri County, are mostly civil structures and seriously collapsed during the earthquake. The rescue forces acted quickly, and many teams including the People's Liberation Army, the Armed Police Force, and the Fire Rescue Team arrived in Quluo Township to carry out rescue operations. The township government is actively setting up temporary tents to provide temporary shelter for the affected people. In Cuoang Village, the government has set up some tents for villagers to live in.
