In 2024, the proportion of excellent water quality sections in surface water across the country reached 90.4%, an increase of 22.6 percentage points from before the implementation of the river chief system in 2016. 3033 black and odorous water bodies in cities at the prefecture level and above have been basically eliminated.
Water resources protection continues to be strengthened, and the total national water use has remained stable within 610 billion cubic meters for many years, and the results of groundwater overexploitation control have been obvious.
At the same time, the water shoreline management protection has been steadily advancing, demarcating the management scope of 1.7 million kilometers of river and lakes, and cleaning up and rectifying a total of 282,000 problems of occupying and destroying river and lake reservoirs.
The river and lake water ecology is also accelerating its recovery. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, which had been cut off for a hundred years, has been fully connected for three consecutive years, and the Yongding River, which has been cut off for more than 20 years, has been fully connected for four consecutive years. More and more rivers and lakes have become happy rivers and lakes that benefit the people.
